Pond Hockey FAQs
Our Pond Hockey programs are an excellent way for kids to have fun AND develop their hockey skills. We always remind parents that pond hockey is not the same as competitive league play. Children’s skill levels with vary broadly and the ‘goal’ is not about winning but about developing skills and enhancing each child’s love of the game!
Each year, we receive a number of questions from parents. Below are some of the most commonly asked questions and answers.
Is Pond Hockey competitive?
Pond Hockey is designed to be a fun, fast-paced environment where kids can continue developing their hockey skills while building confidence and creativity on the ice. While games are naturally competitive at times, the overall focus is on skill development, sportsmanship, and enjoyment of the game.
Over the years, many players and parents have told us Pond Hockey is some of the most fun their child has all season. The relaxed format encourages kids to try new things, play with different teammates, and simply enjoy being on the ice.
My child is new to hockey. Can they still participate?
Yes — children of many different skill levels participate in our program. However, players should already be able to skate independently. Parents should use their judgment based on their child’s skating ability, confidence, and maturity level. If you have questions about age division placement for your child, please email manager@wkhc.ca
Do you balance the teams?
Yes. Teams are mixed each session and every effort is made to create balanced games based on registration information, skill levels, and supervisor observations throughout the season.
Are there practices?
No. This is not a formal league. Each session consists of a 1-hour pond hockey game.
What equipment is required?
Full hockey equipment is mandatory for all players and goalies, including a neck guard and CSA-approved helmet.
What jerseys do players wear?
Players are required to wear the official WKHC blue and yellow Pond Hockey jerseys. Rosters will indicate which jersey colour players wear each session. Players must bring both jerseys to each game.
Can my child play with their friend?
There are no permanent teams, and rosters change throughout the season so players have the opportunity to play with everyone. If friends would like to participate on the same day/time, we encourage families to register early before sessions fill. You may leave a request for player pairings upon registration, we will try to accommodate in the first week, but continued pairings are not guaranteed.
What if my child misses a session?
Absences are common throughout the season. We have transitioned to using a WhatsApp group chat to notify management of absences. A link to your session’s group chat will be sent upon program start. If your child will be absent, please notify us as soon as possible.
You cannot make up a session on another day unless a swap with another child is approved by management.
Do you offer drop-ins?
No. Registration is required for all participants.
Is the program refundable?
No. Registration fees are non-refundable once registration and payment have been submitted.
Can parents volunteer?
Yes! Parent volunteers are always appreciated for bench help and score clock operation. Volunteers must complete a waiver before participating.
What happens if there aren’t enough goalies?
Shooter tutors may be used if needed. In younger age groups, players may occasionally have opportunities to volunteer as fill-in goalies using loaner equipment.
Can my child play in a different age group?
In certain situations, exceptions may be considered. Please contact us prior to registering if you believe another age group may be more appropriate for your child.
Can parents stay and watch?
Absolutely! Viewing areas are available throughout the facility for families to watch and cheer on the players.
